For those in the community who loved the sight, smell and sound of a     steam locomotive, the dieselisation and  reduction of the network was a sad time which     saw the wholesale withdrawal of the steam locomotive.       With the sad loss of the mighty S Class `Pacific‘s’  brought home the realisation that steam     would soon disappear.          Country branch lines continuing to close, with all hope of preservation in the 1950s, the    limited the need for branch line locomotives.      However, thanks to the determination of many steam fans, some locomotives and lines    remained, thanks to a large volunteer workforce who gave up their time to save what they    could.      This DVD is divided into 2 parts, the closure of the narrow gauge   Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook line and the enormous effort by the Puffing Billy   Preservation Society to convince the railways that their members  could run it at a profit when   the railways couldn’t and the eventual restoration of the line from Belgrave to Gembrook.      The second part involves the preservation of Broad Gauge steam in Victoria    on the main line and a few branchlines. A huge task that met with much official resistance.      Thanks to film preserved in the Puffing Billy Preservation Society archives    and Channel 5 Productions own archives, we present an overview of the    success of volunteers in preserving steam, and some lines for future generations
